Marianna Cappellani

Mezzo-soprano

She began studying piano at the age of six and later dedicated herself to singing, starting her vocal training with the renowned mezzo-soprano Fedora Barbieri. She also studied with Alain Billard and continued her advanced training in Milan under the guidance of Gianfranca Ostini.

In 2000, she made her debut at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, participating in the production of Verdi’s Macbeth. She also performed the role of Ortlinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre, conducted by Zoltan Pesko and staged by Cesare Lievi. She went on to collaborate with Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Teatro Regio di Torino, and Teatro Verdi di Busseto.

In 2003, she played the role of the Innkeeper in Wolf-Ferrari’s Sly at the Rome Opera House, alongside Plácido Domingo. That same year, she also joined Domingo in the concert “Musiche per la Speranza” at the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona. In the summer of 2003, she made a successful debut at the Sferisterio in Macerata, playing Lola in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana.

In 2004, she took part in two major productions: Gounod’s Faust by Teatro San Carlo of Naples, in the role of Martha, alongside Marcelo Alvarez and Ruggero Raimondi; and Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota, produced by Teatro Regio di Torino and directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi, in the role of the Milliner.

Still at the Regio di Torino, she performed in the opening show of the 2005/2006 season, singing the Priestess in Aida, under the baton of Pinchas Steinberg. She also gave a heartfelt performance as Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème at the Teatro Alfieri di Asti and made a highly acclaimed debut as Turandot at the “U. Giordano” Festival in Baveno.

In December 2007, she performed in the Christmas Concert at Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania alongside Marcello Giordani, conducted by Maestro Stefano Ranzani.

During the 2007/2008 season at the Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, she impressed audiences as Meg in Verdi’s Falstaff, directed by Roberto De Simone, again with Ruggero Raimondi.

She has also taken part in numerous concerts during the Belliniadi in Catania and, in 2015, participated in the Gran Galà della Lirica at the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, under the artistic direction of Maestro Enrico Stinchelli.

In 2016, again at the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, she performed Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, receiving high praise from both audiences and critics. In January 2017, she joined actor Bruno Torrisi on stage at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Messina for the project “Un bel dì vedremo.” In April 2017, she performed in a concert alongside bass Dario Russo at the Teatro Garibaldi di Enna.

In May of the same year, she was involved in the project “Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore” with Bruno Torrisi at Teatro Regio di Parma, as part of the Musica in Circolo series. In June, she performed in Liège for the concert “Aires d’Italie, notes européennes” for the Italian Consulate in Charleroi. In March 2017, she reprised the role of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana for Teatro Garibaldi di Modica.

In August 2017, she performed the title role in Verdi’s Aida at the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, to great public and critical acclaim. In October of the same year, she reprised Aida in Spain for Opera Fuerteventura.

In May 2018, she sang Mimì in Puccini’s La Bohème at Teatro Garibaldi di Modica.
In September 2018, she was invited to perform in a concert series in Curitiba and Florianópolis, Brazil. That same month, she performed again as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Verghiane Festival in Vizzini, alongside tenor Angelo Villari, baritone Carmelo Corrado Caruso, and actor Bruno Torrisi.

She also joined a new project by choreographer Roberto Zappalà with the Zappalà Danza Company, titled Liederduett, in which she performed six Schubert Lieder with pianist Luca Ballerini.

She participated in another Zappalà Danza production, La Nona (Beethoven’s 9th Symphony arranged for two pianos by F. Liszt), at Teatro Elfo Puccini in Milan in 2019 and returned there in September 2021 for another Zappalà production, Naufragio con spettatore, which opened the MilanoOltre International Dance Festival.

In July 2021, she performed at Teatro Brancaccio in Rome in La Nona with Zappalà Danza and pianists Luca Ballerini and Stefania Cafaro.

In August 2021, she appeared at Teatro della Marinella in Palmi with the project “Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore”, a journey through the world of Puccini, alongside Bruno Torrisi and Angelo Villari. That same month, she performed Santuzza again at Teatro Garibaldi di Modica in Cavalleria Rusticana tra musica e parole by G. Verga and P. Mascagni.

In February 2022, she joined Zappalà Danza in La Nona at Teatro Comunale di Sassari and Teatro Massimo di Cagliari, and again in August at the Ancient Theatre of Segesta, with further performances in November 2022 at Teatro Ristori di Verona, Teatro Comunale di Bolzano, and Teatro Fraschini di Pavia, and in December at Teatro Bellini di Napoli.

In March 2022, she performed Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana at Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, conducted by Maestro Antonio Pirolli.

Also in March 2022, she took part in the production Gran Ballo dell’800 at Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania.

In September 2022, she performed Naufragio con spettatore by Zappalà Danza at the Oriente Occidente Festival in Rovereto, alongside pianist Luca Ballerini.

In March 2023, she was again invited to Teatro Garibaldi di Modica for Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore, with Bruno Torrisi and Angelo Villari.

She appeared in La Nona by Zappalà Danza for Fondazione Teatro Due di Parma and at the Nervi Ballet Festival / Fondazione Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, and participated in the Recital Lyrique International for Le lyrique de Cambes, in collaboration with Camblanes-et-Meynac.

Most recently, she participated in the Belliniana Festival with the project Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore, staged at Teatro Sangiorgi in Catania.
